BMW Motorrad ready for Goodwood Festival of Speed

21/06/2010

There will be a strong BMW presence at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed – both modern and historic.
World Superbike legend and BMW World Superbike racer Troy Corser will be tackling the famous Goodwood House hillclimb on BMW Park Lane’s S 1000 RR Superstock racer. Troy will also be around to sign autographs and meet fans.

Motorcycle News road tester Michael Neeves will also be participating in the hillclimb event on a historic 1950 BMW R25 Kompressor on loan from BMW Classic. This 247cc single-cylinder machine is a living piece of history and boasts a mighty (60 years ago…) 12bhp!

BMW stunt rider Mattie Griffin will be at the event treating visitors to a dazzling show of skills. Irish stunt ace Mattie is number five in the world of Street Bike Freestyle Riding and has recently joined forces with BMW Motorrad. Mattie will be performing two shows a day on a specially-prepared F 800 R.

The BMW Pavilion will house the latest Art Car, a BMW M3 GT2 - straight from the Le Mans 24 Hours. The GT2 will also be driven up the Goodwood hill by Dirk Müller. Müller is a long time BMW works driver who has raced in the FIA World Touring Car Championship and, more recently in the American Le Mans Series also in an M3.
The M3 GT2 is the 17th in the series of BMW Art Cars and has been designed by American artist Jeff Koons. Koons follows in the footsteps of many of the greatest exponents of Pop and modern art including Andy Warhol and David Hockney.

Alongside the Art Car will be a BMW Motorrad HP2 Sport – the road-going version of the class-winning racer ridden by British Superstock star Richard Cooper in the 2008 FIM World Endurance Championship. Also on show will be the new BMW S 1000 RR supersport bike in Motorsports colours.

Tony Jakeman, BMW Motorrad UK Marketing Manager, said: “Goodwood is a truly unique event in the world of motorsports. BMW is delighted to be bringing along a selection of our racing bikes and cars – and one of our World Superbike riders too. With one of the first post-war bikes and the very latest superbike to come out of the factory, there’s something for enthusiasts of classic and modern era motorcycles.

“The Festival of Speed is genuine one-off: a major mix of bikes and cars - old and new - and legendary racers in the beautiful surroundings of Goodwood House near Chichester. As well as modern superbikes and Formula One cars, the gardens are filled with everything from wondrous steam-powered wagons to classic sportscars and World Rally cars – all of which visitors can get closer to than at any other event."
