BMW Motorrad C1-E prototype to appear at BikeSafe Show.

One-off electric scooter on show to public at Sheffield Show 12-13 June

This is the BMW C1-E – a one-off technological showcase inspired by the revolutionary C1 scooter and a milestone in motorcycle safety and zero-emissions technology - and it’ll be at the BikeSafe show on the 12 and 13th of June in Sheffield.

At the heart of the C1-E is a high-spec electric motor and lithium-ion battery, giving the C1-E the power to take on inner-city traffic.

The C1-E takes rider safety to a new level – featuring technology and innovations inspired by BMW’s decades of experience creating high-performance motorcycles and cars. The most striking features are the roll-over bars and windscreen – which create a ‘safety cell’ around the rider.

The rider is further protected by a seatbelt – as seen on the original C1 – a feature which meant the C1 was the only powered two-wheeler exempt from the mandatory helmet requirement in most European countries. Another new innovation for the motorcycle world is an impact-absorbing zone in the nose of the C1-E. While this version has an electric motor and battery pack, the vehicle could also be equipped with an efficient, low-emissions internal combustion engine.

There are currently no plans to put the BMW C1-E into production but feedback and ideas from the project will find their way into future developments. The C1-E will be on static display at the Sheffield BikeSafe Show alongside a range of BMW Motorrad bikes.

The National BikeSafe Motorcycle show returns on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th June 2010 at the Sheffield Arena and is hosted by South Yorkshire Police. The show is completely free and features over 100 exhibitors and trade stands, stunt riders plus lots of family attractions. BikeSafe are also offering the opportunity for every rider to take a free 45-minute ride-out with an advanced police motorcyclist on a range of BMW Motorrad motorcycles – including the exciting new S 1000 RR sportsbike.

The C1-E was created as part of the European Safer Urban Motorcycling (eSUM) initiative - a cooperation project between major urban European motorcycling centres and manufacturers. The cities currently involved in the project include Paris, Rome, Barcelona and London and the manufacturers are BMW and Piaggio.
